Increased bore capacities
A major benefit of the Bibbygear Series II
Gear Coupling is the considerable
increase in maximum bore capacities that
can now be offered. It should be noted,
however, that the maximum bores
specified throughout this publication are
based on keyways to BS 4235. Should
alternative keyways or Imperial Standards
be required, allowance needs to be made
to ensure that the strength of the
coupling hub is not compromised.

High torque capacity/weight ratio
By optimising the pitch circle diameter of
the gear teeth and incorporating
carefully chosen material specifications,
Bibby Transmissions Gear Couplings offer
a high torque capacity to weight ratio
and thus impose lower loads on driving
and driven shafts.

Crowned hub teeth
Advanced CAD analysis, combined with
many years of applications experience,
has enabled our designers to further
refine the tooth form of Bibby
Transmissions Gear Couplings in order to
ensure maximum contact at the strongest
part of the tooth. Hub teeth are
engineered with tooth form crowned on
three surfaces: tip, flank and root. A high
degree of shaft misalignment can be
accommodated.

Some coupling sizes also feature long
sleeve teeth as standard. This allows
greater axial movement with standard
components.

Extended range
Bibby Transmissions can supply gear
couplings in various forms. Most standard
couplings are fully detailed in the
following pages. However, certain
modifications are available which are not
detailed. These include limited end float,
insulated, integral with shear pins, torque
control, brake drums and brake discs.

The long established reputation of Bibby
Transmissions Gear Couplings now
extends to include continuous sleeve,
telescopic and rigid designs, and bore
capacities up to 510mm.

Ease of assembly
Bibbygear Series II Gear Couplings
incorporate exposed bolts and captive
nuts for ease of assembly. Careful design
has resulted in a space efficient bolt
installation which enables the couplings
to offer increased bore capacities whilst
ensuring sufficient boss/bore ratio to
cater adequately for the transmitted
torque. The most compact coupling
installation is thus achieved for the
required power rating.

Fully interchangeable
Complete half-coupling assemblies are
interchangeable with any other half gear
couplings manufactured to AGMA
standards.

Longer hubs
The advanced design of these Bibbygear
Series II Couplings permits the
incorporation of longer hubs, for those
instances where greater shaft/hub contact
is required or where mill motors are the
driving medium.

Standard and special materials
The high specification gear couplings in
the Bibbygear Series II range are
manufactured from high quality carbon
steels as standard.

To suit specific applications Bibby
Transmissions can supply gear couplings in
a variety of specialised materials.

Bibbygear Series II Couplings are able to
withstand a wide temperature range.

The maximum operating limit is 125°C
due to the specific seals and lubricant
used in the standard coupling, However,
by selective changes to material this can
be increased.

Minimum temperatures are limited by the
application and the degree of shock
loading that may occur.

Full details of the anticipated working
temperature range should be supplied to
enable Bibby Transmissions’ engineers to
advise.

Versatility
The standard range of gear couplings
includes a number which are suitable for
mounting vertically as well as
horizontally.

To vary the shaft end gap and control
limited end float, one or both hubs can
be reversed. To facilitate this feature the
hub diameters on either side of the teeth
are identical.

Bibbygear Series II couplings can be
combined with Bibbigard Torque Limiting
Modules. These self-contained assemblies
are fitted between two halves of a
standard coupling. Full details will be
supplied on request.

Special manufacture
Bibby Transmissions are able to supply
components such as hubs and sleeves, and
complete Gear Coupling assemblies,
specially manufactured to suit specific
applications.

There are circumstances in which this
provides a more cost-effective method of
solving specific application requirements.
Please consult a member of our Sales staff
to discuss your individual application.

Most standard couplings can also be
stock-altered to customers’ requirements
This includes parallel or taper boring and
keywaying, puller holes, shortened hubs
etc. These changes are available with
minimal increases in costs or lead times.
